..das gilt aber besonders bei diesem Buch. Formvollendet, melancholisch und zartfüßig schreitet die Geschichte voran. Man hört die Musik hinter den Worten. Ich lese immer wieder darin. Es ist - wie Patti selbst - anmutig und leise, eine gewisse Demut schwingt darin mit, kein Ego spricht aus ihr, wenn sie erzählt, wie sie ihr Leben voller Hingabe und Konsequenz, mit viel Verzicht und materiellem Grenzgang der Kunst gewidmet hat. Das macht sie als Künstlerin weltweit zur wichtigen Inspiration.- Hoffentlich gibt es nie eine Verfilmung dieses Buches, mit Ben Affleck als Mapplethorpe, oder so.
Ich habe dieses Buch gekauft, weil ich mehr über Patti Smith erfahren wollte. Durch die vielen positiven Rezensionen hatte ich hohe Erwartungen an das Buch und ich bin nicht enttäuscht worden.Der Schreibstil von Patti Smith ist außergewöhnlich und hat wirklich Spaßgemacht zu lesen. Ich war wirklich sehr fasziniert und inspiriert und wollte mir noch während dem Lesen eine Kamera schnappen und selbst loslegen Kunst zu schaffen.Jeder der Patti Smith mag, wird Freude an dem Buch haben und diejenigen, die sie nicht kennen, werden definitiv von ihr und Robert Mapplethorpe inspiriert.
Her music reflects inexhaustible strength. So does her language. Being a delicate child, she reads all she can get in her early years. Well read and pregnant at the age of seventeen, she has to move to another house. This evasion is due to bigoted neighbours' hypocritic little town chit-chat. All these adversities make her even stronger. She finally quits her hometown at an early age and takes the bus bound to New York where she meets the late Robert Mappelthorpe. Robert soon becomes her boyfriend. After spending several months of vagrancy on New York doorsills and in subway stations, they find an affordable apartment. Being both erudite in arts and literature, they start an artist's life.Smith gets a job at the famous Scribner's Bookstore. Robert paints and takes photographs (Some of these picture as well as a few of Patti`s paintings, are included in this volume). The Stones deploy Patti's love for rock. Smith and Robert don't make enough money to afford meals or to go into the major arts exhibitions. So one of them would go inside and tell the other in turn. After their life in a cheap apartment they live in a cheap hotel amongst heroine junkies. One of them is a ballet dancer whose career is already destroyed by his addiction. I very much like Smith's dense description of a dance in the corridor. I could see both the sad appearance and the dancer's ruined body like a movie in my mind. The junkies recommend Patti and Robert to eventually leave this undeserving place.The book is easy reading and it's full of subliminal wits, philosophy, and intelligence: Patti Smith is not only a great musician, painter, and poet. She is a great intellectual as well. I have loved her work since around 1975 which is the year of her bewildering Rockpalast appearance on German television. Read this book, it is a summary and a good picture of the sixties and seventies. The text offers the typical rhytmic pattern of Patti's narrative chat-songs such as "Birdland" or "horses". Due to Patti's wide range of skills and interest, the book offers a deep insight into the 70 NY and its in-crowd: The Velvet Underground and Reed, Nico, Warhol's round table at Max's, Todd Rundgren, her first rock-poetry attempts with Lenny Kaye on guitar along with her reading poetry, and so on and so forth. To me, the best is her being so very unpretentious as she hides her own great self behind the protagonists of NY 70s culture. Excuse my poor English.
Eine schöne wahre Geschichte von Liebe und Freundschaft. Es ist auch interessant zu sehen, wie Patti Smith ihren Weg gegangen ist. Sie kam aus einer konservativen Kleinstadt und wusste das Sie Künstlerin werden wollte, sie beschreibt die damalige elektrisierende Aufbruchstimmung in New York und wie viele Jahre sie und Robert Mapplethorpe doch sehr kleine Brötchen backen mussten bis sie als Künstler akzeptiert wurden.Klare Kaufempfehlung
Absolutely fantastic book by Patti Smith. The memoirs of her early years- particularly her move to New York and her relationship to Robert Mapplethorpe. Her desciption of her own path and vision as an artist is well worth reading and re-reading, Especially the heartfelt connection between the both of them as artist and muse in everchanging constellations is inspiring, fascinating, strangely familiar and obliquely beautiful.
Ein sehr stimmungsvolles, melancholisches Buch über die Anfänge von Patti Smith und Robert Mapplethorpe als Künstler. Hat mich sehr traurig gemacht. Ist aber wahrscheinlich das beste Buch, das ich je gelesen habe.
Tolles Buch mit einer besonderen Geschichte. Während es das Leben der Kunstschaffenden in den 60er und 70er Jahren beleuchtet, wird eine außergewöhnliche Liebesgeschichte erzählt. Lässt einen über vieles nachdenklich werden. Eine absolut bereichernde Leseerfahrung.
Teilweise etwas schwierig da sie viel Phrasen verwendet werden , die einem "Nichtengländer"" nicht unbedingt geläufig sind.Dennoch : Inhaltlich ein sehr emotionales und dennoch lockeres und amüsantes Buch - die Zeit verfliegt beim Lesen ...gibt es eine bessere Kritik .
